Latics are on the Wirral this weekend for the Sky Bet League Two clash with Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park. Micky Mellon’s side will be looking to build on a point on the road after sharing the spoils with Fleetwood Town in midweek. Latics took the lead through a well-taken Kane Drummond goal in the first half, with the advantage lasting until the 88th minute, when Ronan Coughlan slid in to snatch a point for the home side. Tuesday’s result means Latics head into the weekend in fifth place, having picked up seven points from their opening four games in League Two. Opposition Tranmere will be aiming to climb further up the table this season after ending the 2025/26 campaign in 21st place, just two points clear of relegation from the Football League. Rovers have started well and are yet to be beaten in their opening four league games. They picked up a win at home to Shrewsbury on the opening day, followed by consecutive draws against Port Vale, Newport and Rotherham. The Birkenhead outfit took the lead against the Millers on Tuesday and held it for 68 minutes before an 84th-minute equaliser. Tranmere regained the lead just three minutes later, but Bobby Faulkner’s last-man challenge in the penalty area resulted in a red card. Tom Bradshaw converted the resulting spot-kick to ensure both sides came away with a point. The result sees Tranmere move to 10th position in League Two on six points. Key Players Veteran Football League winger Tom Ince is off the mark with his new club after joining from Watford in the summer. The former Liverpool, Hull, Derby and Blackpool attacker played 28 games and scored four goals for the Hornets in the Championship last season. Ince has already scored twice in his opening four games for Tranmere, picking up poacher-like positions from a number 10 role. Tranmere also have plenty of options in midfield who could pose a threat. Charlie Whittaker was last season’s top goalscorer with 13 goals, while former Latics captain Tom Conlon could also play a part this weekend. In the Dugout Darrell Clarke leads Rovers, having taken over in May. A former midfielder, Clarke spent the bulk of his playing career at Mansfield before spells with Hartlepool, Stockport, Port Vale and Rotherham. Clarke’s foray into management came at his last club, Salisbury City, where he guided the Wiltshire club to promotion from Conference South before securing a second successive promotion into the Conference Premier. After his success with Salisbury, he was named Bristol Rovers manager in March 2014 but couldn’t prevent the Gas from falling into non-league. He did, however, lead them straight back to the EFL with promotion the following season, following it up with a third-place finish in the fourth tier to earn promotion to League One. After a stint with Walsall, Clarke joined Port Vale, where he took a Valiants side featuring Tom Pett and Tom Conlon to League Two play-off glory in 2022. Following two years with Vale, Clarke later joined Cheltenham Town before taking over at Barnsley in 2024. After a brief return to Bristol Rovers, Clarke joined Tranmere in May following Pete Wild’s interim tenure at the back end of the campaign.
